Why Meal Replacements?

For years, I was admittedly a big hypocrite. I watched as friends posted about meal replacement programs on my social media, and completely rolled my eyes. "Meal replacement shakes aren't the answer to our health problem," I would mutter to my husband. (The irony? I was working at a prestigious weight management clinic that prescribed - you guessed it - meal replacements.) I was close-minded that there were other issues beyond weight that were truly impacting the nation's health crisis.

About a year ago, my best friend met up with me and shared that she was on this program, and was it ok if we didn't go out to eat breakfast because she was drinking a shake? I agreed, and she ended up making me one too. It was actually really good, but I still rolled my eyes at the program. In the beginning of January, God placed a vision on my heart, and gently guided me to connect with someone regarding these particular meal replacements. I took one look, and have never looked back. Here's why Isagenix is my replacement suggestion of choice, and why I believe everyone could benefit from integrating this nutrition into their lives.

  • Isagenix has a no-compromise quality for the ingredients. This is very important to me, because I'm very wary of supplements, especially as more and more studies are being released exposing supplements to not contain the ingredients they claim to. See, supplements are not regulated by the FDA, so there is no one to hold a company accountable to their claims. Ethics, sure, but some companies place money (greed) over ethics. Isagenix uses third party testing to validate the quality of their products, and that is a process that I can stand behind.

  • The shakes are nutritionally balanced, contain 23 vitamins and minerals, and several active enzymes. Most people don't get the daily recommended nutrition, whether it is through eating empty calories (refined foods, junk food, etc.), but also because our fruits and vegetables do not contain the same level of nutrition as our parents were receiving when they were growing up.

  • Additionally, the shakes incorporate healthy fats, healthy and low glycemic carbohydrates, and undenatured whey protein or pea and brown rice protein. Undenatured protein is considered the best of the best when it comes to bioavailability of amino acids for our muscles to absorb.

  • There are no artificial flavors, sweeteners, or colors. Not all meal replacements are the same, so be cognizant of what you are putting into your bodies.

  • The simplicity of this system is incredible. Little-to-no meal prep means more time spent doing what you want to do!

  • The systems address toxicity and acidity of our environments. Many of the products are alkaline, including the greens. Even if you eat organically, there are still toxins that can exist in your food, the air you breathe, and the water you drink. The nutritional cleanse helps support and release more toxins (see the study details below). Toxins are lipophyllic, which means they love hanging out in fat - particularly, the fat around our organs, which makes this fat especially dangerous. The cleanse element of these systems helps support the release of visceral fat, and thus the release of toxins, and helps support your body in flushing these toxins out.

Isagenix is backed by independent, third party research. This. Is. Huge. While Isagenix funded the research conducted at Skidmore college, they did not have the right for refusal - meaning, if the results did not show favorably for Isagenix, they'd get published anyway. Here's a link to some of the study overviews, but I want to get into the findings from the Skidmore study because it is truly groundbreaking.

See, many people think that eating "whole" food is more healthy than doing 2 shakes per day. These studies shatter that myth.

In the Skidmore study, participants were either given the Isagenix cleansing protocol (slight adaptations included cleansing one day per week instead of two days twice a month, drinking 6 two ounce servings of cleanse for life compared to 4 four ounce servings) or assigned a diet from the American Heart Association Heart Healthy diet protocol. Participants were matched for calories, and told they could not exercise. The results for the first twelve weeks speak for themselves:

The Isagenix group lost significantly more weight, specifically the visceral fat and body fat overall, while also improving their lean muscle mass.

The maintenance portion is truly exciting. Participants on the Heart Healthy diet were given about 120 calories less than the Isagenix participants, who ate 1-2 shakes per day and only cleansed 1-2 times per month. Theoretically, the Isagenix group should have gained 17 pounds more than the Heart Healthy group based on calories alone, but as you can see, they continue to maintain and even potentially decrease their body fat while the Heart Healthy group almost returned to their original weight and body fat despite "dieting".

This highlights why Isagenix is TRULY a lifestyle, not a diet. Plus, Isagenix maintenance included 3 times more toxin release - meaning organs can function more healthfully!

But what about the fact that I have to drink shakes? Won't I miss food?

You get to eat a lot while on an Isagenix system. Depending on your needs, you can eat several snacks and 1-2 meals with a fork and knife, and utilize the Isagenix nutrition for 1-2 meals per day. Additionally, when you work with me as a health coach, one of the things we're going to spend time on is mindful eating. This means you break the unhealthy relationship you have with food.
